Oscar Gilbert was born in Walton-on-Naze, Essex, on 3 October 1858 and joined the service as a member of the Carpenter's Crew aboard H.M.S. PENELOPE on 19 February 1880. He was advanced to Shipwright on 1 November 1882 and served as a Shipwright aboard PEMBROKE (July 1883), and advanced to Caulker on 4 January 1884. He subsequently served in this rate aboard CARYSFORT (April 1884), and whilst aboard this ship earned the ‘Suakin 1885’ clasp. He next joined THALIA (June 1887), INDUS (July 1887), PEMBROKE (September 1887), and RUPERT (January 1888). In the latter ship he was disrated to Carpenter's Crew, and served in this rate aboard PEMBROKE (April 1888) and MONARCH (April 1888). He regained his rate of Shipwright 20 August 1889 and next served aboard PEMBROKE (May 1890), CALYPSO (July 1890), and PEMBROKE (May 1893). During service in PEMBROKE he was advanced to Leading Shipwright on 14 July 1892 and to Carpenter's Mate on 1 December 1892, and subsequently served in this rate aboard the following ships: TRITON (April 1893), PEMBROKE (November 1893), CRESCENT (February 1894), RINGAROOMA (May 1894), MILDURA (September 1896), KATROOMBA (April 1897), PEMBROKE II (May 1897), WILDFIRE I (September 1897) and PEMBROKE (August 1901). He was pensioned ashore on 10 July 1904 having served for 22 years but character ratings of ‘good’ in 1885, ‘fair’ in 1888 and ‘good’ in 1890 deprived him of all chance of receiving his L.S. & G.C. medal.
