John Watson was born in Southsea, Hants, on 16 October 1853. He entered the service as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 7 January 1874, and then served aboard HERCULES (1875-77) where he was advanced to Stoker during July 1875, JUMNA (1877-80), INCONSTANT (24 August 1880 to 16 November 1882), CROCODILE (5 February 1884 to 30 April 1886), CORDELIA (1887-90) receiving advancement to Leading Stoker in August 1887, VERNON (1890-92), and ROYAL SOVEREIGN (1892-93) where he was advanced to Leading Stoker 1st Class in April 1893. He was pensioned to shore on 20 January 1894 and having lost one Good Conduct Badge on three occasions, was not awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal.
