George Roberts was born in Devonport, Devon, on 10 August 1856. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPLACABLE on 13 December 1871, and was advanced to Boy 1st Class during January 1873. He subsequently served aboard AGINCOURT (1873-75), where he changed his branch to become a Signalman 3rd Class on 10 August 1874. He served next aboard MINOTAUR (1875-77) where he received advancement to Signalman 2nd Class during April 1876, and then to Signalman 1st Class whilst aboard ROYAL ADELAIDE in September 1877, and INFLEXIBLE (5 July 1881 to 31 July 1884) earning the first of his Egypt awards. He was next drafted to MONARCH (1 October 1884 to 18 August 1885) for duties with the Nile Flotilla, and whilst in this ship he received his L.S. & G.C. medal on 4 October 1884. He was later advanced to Yeoman of Signals on 25 April 1885 before earning his second Egypt reward. He continued to serve aboard LION (1887-88), ANSON (1889-91) and LEANDER (1892-94) and was pensioned to shore on 14 August 1894.
