Frederick Eagles was born in Westminster, London, on 27 June 1857. He entered the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD on 1 September 1873, and then served aboard IMPLACABLE (1873-75), where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class in September 1874, and later to Ord whilst aboard CONTENT during June 1875. He subsequently served aboard LORD WARDEN (1876-78) and MONARCH (16 April 1878 to 25 April 1885) where he was advanced to Able Seaman on 1 August 1880. During service in the latter vessel he was present at the bombardment of Alexandria in July 1882 and was later landed as part of the ship's Naval Brigade and took part in the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir in September 1882. He was discharged to shore on expiration of his first ten year engagement on 6 August 1885 and did not qualify for a Long Service & Good Conduct medal.
