Edward Kelly was born in Cornwall, Donegal, Ireland, on 13 September 1860. He joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. EAGLE on 19 June 1876, and then served aboard IMPLACABLE (1876-78), after being advanced to Boy 1st Class in June 1877. For the Egypt Campaign he served aboard ALEXANDRA (12 March 1880 until 1 May 1885), and was present in at the bombardment of Alexandria and landed as part of the ship's Naval Brigade which fought at the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir. He was advanced to Able Seaman in May 1880 and to Leading Seaman in February 1883. He subsequently served aboard STARLING (1886-88) where he was advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class in December 1886, but disrated to A.B. in April 1888, and to BEAGLE (1889-90) where he was reinstated as a Leading Seaman in December 1889, but then deserted on 7 March 1890. He was not a well conducted sailor, since for five years his character assessment was less than ‘Very Good’, hence no L.S. & G.C. medal.
