John Barker was born on 25 October 1843 and joined the Indian Navy as a 2nd Class Boy on 11 June 1859 in Bombay Dockyard, becoming an Engineer's Apprentice in February 1860 aboard DALHOUSIE. In this rate he served aboard the following ships: FEROZE (1861), PHIAD (July 1862), GOOLANAR (November 1862), HUGH ROSE (May 1863), and PLIAM FALCONS. He was advanced to Journeyman on 10 February 1865 whilst serving aboard saddle-back barges; promoted to 4th Engineer on 2 May 1866, and appointed to HUGH ROSE. He joined GOOLANAR as 3rd Engineer on 6 March 1869 and is reported to have served on three Expeditions, to China, Muscat and Bahrein. From 1870 to 1878 he served ashore, firstly as Engineer in Charge of Smithys at Bombay Dockyard, and then as Condensing Engineer at Aden Dockyard. He joined ARMIRAMUS on 24 April 1878 in the rank of 2nd Class Engineer and served in this vessel for over four years including service in Egyptian waters during 1882. He was promoted to Engineer on 16 November 1882 and appointed to SEMIRAMIS, prior to being pensioned ashore on 27 December 1882 after 22 years service.
