Alfred Faram was born in Old Brompton, Kent, on 5 April 1849. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 8 August 1870, and subsequently served aboard SULTAN (1870-75), and ALEXANDRA (1877-80). He was advanced to Leading Stoker in September 1880 aboard PEMBROKE, prior to serving in SALAMIS (1880-82), where he not only earned his Egypt meda, but also received his L.S. & G.C. medal on 5 November 1880. After spending a Commission aboard FROLIC he was pensioned to shore on 5 August 1890.
