James Hoods was born in Newfoundland on 7 June 1843, and joined the service direct from the Merchant Navy in the prime rate of Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. FLORA on 20 September 1867. He subsequently served aboard VESTAL (1868-71), TERROR (1871-73) where he was advanced to Yeoman of Stores on 1 June 1872, VERNON (1876-79) and NORTHUMBERLAND (1879-85). He was Pensioned to shore from SHANNON on 6 September 1887, having lost Good Conduct Badges on five occasions during his career hence no L.S. & G.C. medal.
