Henry Doidge was born in Moricetown, Devonport, on 17 September 1854. He entered the service as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. INDUS on 19 February 1875, was drafted to BLACK PRINCE in November 1875, and served until May 1878, after being rated as Stoker in February 1876. Subsequently served aboard HUMBER (1878-80) and AGINCOURT (January 1882 until May 1884). He next served in SHANNON (1884-85) where he was advanced to Leading Stoker in May 1885, BRAMBLE (1887-91), and SWIFTSURE (1892-93) where he became a Leading Stoker 1st Class on 1 April 1893. He was pensioned to shore from DEVASTATION on 13 March 1895.
