Benjamin Sammels was born at Torpoint, Cornwall on 11 July 1831. Not unusually for men joining the service at this period with a craft skill, he was 21 years old when he signed on as Carpenter's Crew aboard H.M.S. TRINCOMALEE on 1 July 1852. He was advanced to Carpenter's Mate in July 1857 when he joined H.M.S . CAMBRIAN for a three year Commission. Drafted to H.M.S. INDUS on 9 July 1861, he left her upon promotion to Carpenter R.N., to date from 18 October 1861. He joined H.M.S. HIMALAYA on 7 November 1874 for her Commission ending in June 1878, and was subsequently pensioned on 30 June 1879.
