George Faulkner was born in Alverstoke, Gosport, on 27 October 1854. He first entered the service as a Writer 3rd Class aboard the DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 8 November 1872, and next served aboard H.M. Ships LORD WARDEN (1873-75), HERCULES (1875-77) and then EUPHRATES (July 1877 to August 1880) where he received advancement to Writer 2nd Class during November 1877. He was drafted to H.M.S. AMETHYST (1882-85) receiving further advancement to Writer 1st Class in November 1882, and was awarded his LS & GC medal on 6 December 1884 as a Writer 1st Class. After a Commission aboard H.M.S. ASIA (1885-89) he was advanced to Chief Writer on 1 July 1889 aboard ORONTES. He was twice allowed to sign on for an additional period of five years each time as a non C.S. man in 1895 and 1900, subsequently serving aboard H.M. Ships TRINCOMALEE (1889-95), MEDEA (1895-1901) and APOLLO (1901-03), and was finally pensioned to shore from BOSCAWEN with 32 years service on 6 July 1904.
