Edwin Hendy was born in Chale, Isle of Wight on 25 March 1858. He first entered as a Cook's Mate aboard H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 17 February 1877, and then drafted to H.M.S. EUPHRATES as Cook's Mate 2nd Class on 23 July 1877, and advanced to 1st Class on 1 September 1879, prior to being paid off in May 1880. He later served commissions aboard RUBY (1885-89) where he was advanced to Ship's Cook 2nd Class in March 1886, and aboard FIREBRAND (1891-94) as Ship's Cook. Although his papers record him being recommended for the LS & GC award by “MR” (medal recommended), there is no mention of this award being approved. He was pensioned from H.M.S. EXCELLENT on 31 March 1897.
