Gilbert R. West was born at the Palace of Kensington on 11 November 1863. He first entered as a Naval Cadet aboard H.M.S. BRITANNIA on 15 July 1876, and joined BOADICEA in July 1878 with promotion to Midshipman on 25 July 1879, prior to being paid off in April 1882. He was made a Sub Lieutenant in September 1883 whilst aboard TEMERAIRE (Oct 1882 to December 1883), and a Lieutenant on 31 December 1886.
