Joseph Button was born in Rochford, Essex, on 30 November 1845. He joined the service as a Warrant Officer's Cook on the books of H.M.S. CUMBERLAND, the Guard Ship at Sheerness, for duty in the Naval Barracks, on 17 May 1866. He served as Gun Room Cook aboard H.M.Ships MEEANEE and RODNEY (1868-70) prior to joining H.M.S. RATTLESNAKE as Engineer's Cook in October 1870. He became an Engineer's Servant in January 1872 and was paid off on 25 March 1874, being discharged during September 1881 from H.M.S. SAPPHO, and from the service still with the rate of Domestic 2nd Class.
