The Honourable Edward Downes Law, later Lord Ellenborough, was born 9 May 1841. First entered the service as a Naval Cadet aboard H.M.S. COLOSSUS on 10 August 1854, serving aboard her in the Baltic during the summer of 1855. He received promotion to Midshipman in July 1856 and served aboard HIGHFLYER (1856-61), being made a Sub Lieutenant on 11 March 1860, and subsequently aboard SHANNON (1862-65). Whilst aboard HIGHFLYER he served on the coast of China, earning the China medal with Canton clasp. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 31 August 1861, and later served aboard PHOEBE (1867-68). He joined COQUETTE in July 1872 and was Lieutenant Commanding this ship on the Gold Coast during the Ashantee war of 1873-74. He retired with the rank of Commander on 1 October 1873 , succeeded his cousin as the 5th Baron, Lord Ellenborough, on 26 June 1902, and died on 9 December 1915.
