John O’Flaherty was born on Christmas Day 1845 in Ballycotton, Cork. He joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. INDUS on 14 March 1861, serving subsequently aboard H.M.Ships TRAFALGAR (1862-64) and BRISK (1864-69). He was drafted to H.M.S. BITTERN as an Able Seaman in February 1871, attaining Petty Officer status in January 1874. He served a second Commission aboard BITTERN during which he participated as a Quarter Master at the bombardment of Alexandria on 11 July 1882, being pensioned less than a week after she was paid off on 3 January 1884.
