Born in Essex in 1834. He only served one Commission in the Royal Navy, joining H.M.S. IRIS on 2 April 1858 as a Leading Seaman, thus proving that he was an experienced prime seaman from the Merchant Service, and was discharged to shore on 3 August 1861.
