D.F.M. London Gazette 14 December 1943. ‘In November 1943 this airman was the rear gunner in an aircraft detailed for an operation against enemy shipping. In the attack, which was executed at a low level, Flight Sergeant Spencer was wounded in the back. Nevertheless, he insisted in remaining at his post until the operation was concluded. He displayed fortitude and devotion to duty of a high order.’

Early in 1942 No. 38 Squadron was placed under No. 201 Naval Co-operation Group for operations as an emergency torpedo-bomber unit, and was continuously employed on operations against shipping between Europe and Cyrenaica, including minelaying operations, until the end of the battle of Alamein, after which it was chiefly employed on anti-submarine operations in the Eastern Mediterranean. In April 1943 it resumed anti-shipping operations in the Ægean. It is believed that Sergeant Spencer won his D.F.M. in an attack off Malta.
