A Great War M.C. group of four awarded to Captain F. D. R. Milne, 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen’s Bays)
Military Cross, G.V.R., named on the reverse; 1914 Star, with copy Mons clasp (Lieut., 2/D. Gds.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt.) good very fine (4)

M.C. London Gazette 26 July 1918 ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a company holding a river line. The enemy having succeeded in crossing the river, his position became precarious. He immediately formed a defensive flank, and even when practically surrounded by superior numbers, he continued to hold on until finally ordered to retire. He showed great skill in extricating the remains of his company, and his coolness and courage throughout were beyond praise.’

Lieutenant F. D. R. Milne commanded No. 4 Troop, “C” Squadron of the Bays when the Regiment went to war in 1914. He was present with the Regiment at the famous action on 1 September 1914, at Nery, in which “L” Battery, Royal Horse Artillery won three Victoria Crosses, and was wounded in this action. Milne is mentioned in the Regimental History for his part during the advance to the Aisne on 12 September, when his horse was killed, and in the First Battle of Ypres, at Messines on 30-31 October when he was again wounded. His Military Cross was probably awarded for his gallantry during the German Offensive of March 1918.
