‘We are pleased to hear that H.E. Major-General Barker has desired Colonel Chater to convey to Lance Corporal Pratt his high appreciation of the bravery and promptitude of action displayed by him in saving the life of a Chinaman and which will doubtless assure his being the honoured recipient of the Royal Humane Society Medal. On the 30th November a painter was working on a platform outside the hospital ship Meeanee when he fell into the water, and being unable to swim had sunk once when Lance Corporal Pratt, who was in bed (ill), hearing the noise of persons trying to rescue him, jumped through the port, seized the man and supported him until both were picked up by a boat.’
