M.M. London Gazette 23 April 1920 “For bravery in the field with British Forces in North Russia.”

“On 14 September 1919 at Vat Navalok, this rating showed great bravery and devotion to duty in the attack on Siding 5. He advanced over open ground with his machine gun in the face of heavy enemy fire, and by skilful handling of his gun was largely responsible for the retirement of the enemy from their position. He set a fine example of determination to the landing party.”

An exceptionally rare occasion of a Mercantile Marine Reserve Rating fighting on land and receiving military recognition for his brave conduct.
