James Partridge was recruited by Sergeant Major William Ruston and enlisted in the Royal Marines on 24 April 1837, receiving promotion to Corporal in 1841, to Sergeant five years later and on 1 March 1854 made a Colour Sergeant, Plymouth Division. A notation on his discharge papers states: ‘Was present at the operations [aboard PHILOMEL] in the River Plate, and at the taking of the forts of Obligado in November 1845.’
