Awarded13 July 1841.
Enlisted as a Royal Marine at Woolwich on 17 April 1810 aged 18 years, born Elsenham, Norfolk. His career is an exceptional case. He served for 21 years as a Private R.M. until pensioned on 4 May 1831. He then chose to commence a new career as a seaman joining H.M.S. BARHAM as an Ord at the age of 39 years in October 1831. Within four months he was rated Able Seaman, reaching Petty Officer status as a Gunner's Mate at the end of his gunnery course aboard H.M.S. EXCELLENT on 15 July 1835. He is entitled to the N.G.S. medal for Syria for services aboard H.M.S. EDINBURGH during her commission ending in July 1841. He was invalided in November 1843 with a total combined service (RM & RN) of 33 years.
