Only eight medals were awarded to Naval Engineers before the Order in Council dated 27 February 1847 (initiating the status of Commissioned Rank for Engineers) which negated the need for further issues of the medal. A number of medals were struck, at the behest of the Admiralty, as specimens for collectors during the last century. It is not thought that these specimen strikings numbered more than 30.
