London Gazette 22 February 1919 ‘In recognition of valuable services rendered with the armies in France and Flanders.’

The following details were extracted from Admiralty records: “63rd (RN) Division Medical Unit 2nd (RN) Fieid Ambulance. 53840 FITTON, Edmund assisted in removing many wounded from a forward area while under heavy fire. He displayed great courage and devotion.”

Of the 119 M.S.M.’s of this type only 5 were awarded to the Royal Marine Medical Unit.
