Joseph Sinclair entered the Royal Navy as a Supplementary Lieutenant on 31 October 1895, ex-Royal Navy Reserve, Sub Lieutenant on 6 September 1894. He was appointed to H.M.S. BLONDE on 10 September 1895 and served in this ship during the various expeditions in Sierra Leone 1898. Appointed to H.M.S. HEARTY February 1899 and next joined HOTSPUR in February 1902, then the following ships: INDUS (1904), THAMES (1906), VICTORY (1908), and IMPERIEUSE in 1909 where he was assistant to the Captain in Charge and Kings Harbour Master, Portland. He retired as Commander on 12 April 1911 and was appointed to assist the Commodore in Charge and Kings Harbour Master at Portland 12 April 1911. He continued to serve in this capacity until 1918 when he reverted to the Retired List. Awarded a Naval Pension of £50.00 a year 23 June 1922 and a Travers Pension of £75.00 per year on 28 April 1933. He died in 1942.
