Robert Strike was born in Clowance, Devon, on 9 March 1866. He first entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 19 January 1882, and advanced to Boy 1st Class during December 1882. Subsequently served aboard the following H.M. Ships, ACHILLES (1883-85), where he was advanced to Ord in March 1884, MINOTAUR (1886-87), NORTHUMBERLAND (1887-88), INDUS (1889-91) receiving advancement to A.B. during September 1890, PHILOMEL (11 June 1892 to 30 November 1894) earning this African award, EDGAR (1897-98), BENBOW (1898-1901), HIBERNIA (1902-03) and THESEUS (1905-08) from whence he was pensioned to shore on 20 May 1908. During his career he lost one G.C.B. on two occasions, but also had been sent to serve time in cells on nine different occasions, hence no L.S. & G.C. medal. He joined the R.F.R. on 24 May 1908.
