Edward Bedder was born in Saltash, Cornwall, on 10 January 1847. He entered as a Painter 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 7 October 1869, and then served aboard H.M. Ships TRAFALGAR (1870-72), INDUS (1872-73), NORTHUMBERLAND (1873-75), and BLACK PRINCE (1875-77) where he was advanced to Painter 1st Class during August 1875. Aboard IMPREGNABLE (1878-80) and was later drafted to BRITON (1881-84) to earn his Suakin reward, and then to HIMALAYA (1886-89). Pensioned from the service whilst serving aboard H.M.S. REVENGE on 3 November 1889.
