John Heaynes was born at Devonport on 1 December 1857. First entered as an Acting Engine Room Artificer aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 13 August 1879, and then served aboard H.M. Ships EUPHRATES (1879-80), RUBY (1880-82) where he was advanced to E.R.A. in February 1881, PELICAN (1884-88), PIGMY (1889-93) where he attained the rate of Chief E.R.A. in August 1891, SYBILLE (1895-98) and was pensioned to shore from VIVID II 15 August 1899.
