Joseph Dyer was born in Dover on 16 May 1865. First entered as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ST VINCENT on 2 December 1880, and subsequently joined H.M.S. HECLA as a Boy 1st Class on 19 August 1882. He was advanced to Ord in May 1883 and to A.B. in February 1885 whilst serving aboard INVINCIBLE ((1882-85). He joined H.M.S. BENBOW as a P.O. 2nd Class on 14 June 1888, and was advanced to P.O. 1st Class in April 1889 and paid off in January 1891. He then served aboard H.M. Ships WILDFIRE (1891-94) and RINGAROOMA (1894-97) and was finally invalided from H.M.S. EXCELLENT on 11 March 1898 with a fractured knee. He never received a L.S. & G.C. medal.
