Henry Stokes was born at Deal, Kent, on 2 September 1857. He joined the service as Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. DUNCAN on 1 March 1874, and was drafted to H.M.S. TAMAR as an Ord on 4 October 1876, advanced to A.B. in July 1879 prior to being paid off in April 1880. Advanced to Leading Seaman in July 1887 and Petty Officer 1st Class in December 1889. Pensioned on 7 April 1896. During his career he was twice gaoled by civil power (Limerick 1881-82) for periods exceeding one month with consequent loss of Good Conduct Badges, and thus losing his chance of ever earning his L.S. & G.C. medal.
