John Metford was born at Bristol, Somerset on 15 July 1853. He entered the service on 21 July 1868 aboard H.M.S. VALIANT for his far from distinguished career as a Boy 2nd Class. Drafted as an Ord to H.M.S. SEAGULL on 29 July 1872, and after he had earned his Ashantee Campaign medal, he was sentenced to forty two days at Breakwater Gaol in June 1874, and later whilst still aboard SEAGULL was sentenced at a Court Martial in October 1875 to be dismissed from the Royal Navy.
