Oswald B. Niven was born on 26 March 1845. Entered the service as a Naval Cadet aboard H.M.S. BRITANNIA on 13 September 1859 (aged 14 years), in which lowly rank he served at sea aboard H.M.S. DIADEM (1860-62), during which time he was promoted to Midshipman on 23 June 1861. His next vessel was H.M.S. ROSARIO (1862-66) receiving promotion to Sub Lieutenant on 21 December 1864. Lent to H.M.S. PYLADES for service in a gun-boat June to August 1866, returning the NIGER until November 1866. Promoted to Lieutenant whilst aboard H.M.S. DUNCAN on 21 January 1867. Subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships BELLEROPHON (1868-70), SULTAN (1872-75) and AURORA from July 1875 until sent to hospital in December 1875. Retired as “Unfit” with rank of Commander on 15 July 1876.
