Born Devonport on 28 October 1845. Entered the service as Carpenter's Crew aboard H.M.S. CONSTANCE on 16 July 1865 for her 3 year Commission; loaned to the Steam Tug RESCUE in 1866, advanced to Shipwright in July 1867. Joined H.M.S. INDUS as Carpenter's Mate in May 1878, advanced to Skilled Carpenter's Mate on 5 April 1884 when joining H.M.S. CARYSFORT, serving aboard her until November 1885. Pensioned to shore from INDUS on 11 August 1885, re-entered in October 1885 but invalided in February 1886.
