John Crawley joined the service as a Naval Cadet aboard H.M.S. BRITANNIA on 13 September 1859, appointed to H.M.S . MARLBOROUGH as a Cadet in December 1860. Whilst aboard H.M.S. AGAMEMNON he received promotion to Midshipman in June 1862. Joined H.M.S. PYLADES on 19 October 1862 where he was made an Acting Sub Lieutenant (January to October 1866), reverting to Midshipman and passing through eight different vessels. Promoted to Sub Lieutenant 9 October 1867, but on 25 April 1868 he was removed from the Naval College for misconduct and appointed to a sea-going vessel, H.M.S. PALLAS, which he never joined since he was found guilty of "drunkenness" at a Court Martial on 7 May 1868, and sentenced to be dismissed from the service.
