Griffen was born in Brixham, Suffolk, on 19 September 1812. He joined the service very late in life when aged 42 to serve as an A.B. aboard H.M.S. NANKIN from December 1854. He changed his branch in May 1857 to become a Stoker aboard RALEIGH when she was wrecked off the China coast. After being rescued he was placed aboard RETRIBUTION on 20 August 1858, and discharged to shore when she was paid off on 22 Decemeber 1860. His China medal was sent to his widow on 16 March 1894.
