George Gregory joined the Royal Marines in 1847, and was present at the bombardment of Odessa on 22 April 1854. He served with the Royal Marine Battalion at the occupation of Eupatoria in 1854, and with the Brigade in the Crimea during the siege of Sebastopol in 1854-55. He was awarded the Turkish Order of the Medjidie, 5th class, the citation stating: ‘Served with the Marine Brigade during the whole operation in Crimea as Quarter Master of a Battalion.’ He retired with the rank of Colonel on 6 August 1880. His Crimea medal is one of only two officially impressed awards so far known to Commissioned Officers.
