Francis Coucher’s first entry into the service was aboard SPHINX, which he joined at Rangoon on 8 January 1853. Since a proclamation was made on 20 December 1852 that the province of Pegu was annexed and further conquests in Burma abandoned, followed by a more formal public announcement on 20 January 1853, it could thus be said that Coucher never really earned his commemorative award!
