George Mussell was born in Studland, Dorset, and joined the Navy at the age of 18 aboard the BELLEROPHON in which ship he served five years and was present during the operations in Syria. Although fully qualified, he never applied for the Naval General Service medal with the clasp ‘Syria’. He ‘signed on’ for a Continuous Service engagement on 18 March 1854, and saw service in the Baltic aboard the CRESSY for which he was entitled to the medal. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal aboard MAJESTIC in June 1861.
