Samuel Gowden was born in Devonport and joined STYX on 17 July 1851, aged 26 years, having joined the service as a Boy aboard H.M.S. DIDO in February 1842. For some misdemeanour he was sent to Prison in Hong Kong for a fortnight commencing on 15 October 1853. He served a five year Commission in ESK (1856-61), including the operations at Canton during the China campaign, and was pensioned as a Captain of the Mast with 23 years adult service on 12 January 1867.
