William Champion was born at Sittingbourne, Kent, and joined the service as a member of the seaman branch when aged 24 years. His first vessel was H.M.S. POICTIERS where he served for four months prior to being signed aboard the DEE as an Ordinary Seaman in March 1848. Less than a month later his request to change branches was approved, becoming a Stoker on 19 April 1848, in which rate he was paid off on 10 January 1852.
