Nicholas Johnson was severely wounded at the attack made on Kawiti’s Pah at Ruapekapeka on 10 & 11 January 1846, and suffered amputation of his right leg. Of the twelve men wounded in this action, only two seamen - Nicholas Johnson and John James - applied for the New Zealand medal 23 years later when it was authorised.
