Samuel Bullock was born on 20 July 1851 in Redcliff, Somerset. He joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Impregnable on 31 December 1877, and then served aboard Ganges (1878-79) where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class during January 1879. He next joined Hibernia (1879-80) where he was made an Ord in July 1879, and subsequently served aboard Alexandra (September 1881 to 28 February 1882) where he received advancement to A.B. during November 1881, Hecla (16 January 1884 to 6 August 1884) earning his Egypt award, and finally Polyphemus (1887-89). He was discharged to shore after expiration of his ten year engagement on 22 July 1887 and was not eligible for a Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
