Robert Moore was educated at Sherborne School. He enlisted in the 19th (Public Schools) Bn. Royal Fusiliers in September 1914 and was promoted to Corporal in December and Sergeant in May 1915. He accompanied the battalion to France, November 1915 and proceeded in March 1916 to No. 6 Officer Cadet Battalion at Balliol College, Oxford. He was commissioned in the Sussex Regiment but transferred to the Rifle Brigade and joined the 10th (S) Bn. in France in October. He was mortally wounded on 14 August 1917 in the forcing of the Steenbeeck before Langemarck and died the following day at No. 61 Casualty Clearing Station, aged 21. He is buried in Dozinghem Cemetery near Ypres. His C.O. wrote: “He was killed gallantly leading his Company, of which he was in charge, and all speak of his splendid courage and leadership. He had himself killed four Germans before being shot down by machine gun and rifle fire. He was wounded earlier on in the day, before the attack, but refused to leave his men, and finally went over at the head of them all. It was a gallant death, and will not be forgotten by the battalion, I know. He was such a splendid officer and we all miss him.”

Sold with further research. There is a photograph of Moore in the memorial book in the chapel at Sherborne School.
