James Joseph Winton was born at Bethnal Green, London, and enlisted for the Corps of Household Cavalry in London on 16 September 1898, aged 18 years 8 months. He served with the Royal Horse Guards in South Africa from 4 December 1899 to 28 November 1900. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1906, and was discharged on 15 September 1910.
