Joseph Saunders enlisted for the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1880. He served with the regiment in Egypt in 1882, and with the Mounted Infantry in the Nile Expedition, including the actions of El-Teb, Tamaai and Abu Klea. He was one of only eight men of the regiment to earn all four clasps with the Mounted Infantry. A detachment of two officers and 25 men of the regiment were present at Abu Klea with the Mounted Infantry Camel Regiment.
