John Peter Holger Nelson was taken prisoner at Pretoria in 1881, when serving with D’Arcy’s Horse, the Pretoria Carbineers. At other times he served with the Cape Mounted Riflemen, Cape Town Rangers and Lonsdale’s Horse. He enlisted into the Imperial Light Horse on 22 Spetember 1899, aged 46, and was wounded at Colenso on 15 December 1899
