Arthur J. Petit was born at Tralee in September 1852, and enlisted for the 57th Foot on 10 February 1868. He was sent to Kneller Hall School of Music as a Boy Musician, December 1868 to May 1869, and subsequently served with the Band of 15 men and 20 Drummers. He served in South Africa during the Zulu War from April to November 1879, and was discharged at Dublin on 20 March 1880.
