William Magher was born in Limerick in 1821, and enlisted for the 5th Dragoon Guards at Cahir on 13 June 1842, aged 21. He proceeded with the regiment to the Crimea in June 1854 and was present at Balaklava, Inkermann and Sebastopol. He died at Scutari on 5 February 1855.

The 5th Dragoon Guards had two men killed and eleven wounded in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava on 25 October 1854. Eight men were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
