The modern country of Liberia was first settled in 1816 by the American Colonization Society as a homeland for American freed slaves. The U.S. government provided funds and assisted in procurement of land from the native chiefs. The various settlements united in 1839 to form the Commonwealth of Liberia; the country was established as Africa’s first republic in 1847
